The mean streets of Brooklyn, New York, saw the
formation of Biohazard in 1988 by Evan Seinfeld

(bass, vocals), Billy Graziedi
(guitar, vocals), Bobby
Hambel
(guitar) and Danny Schuler
(drums), and the
harsh realities of urban life provide constant lyrical
inspiration for this socially and politically aware
hardcore band. Modest beginnings supporting the
likes of the Cro-Mags and Carnivore at the famous
L'Amour club led to an independent debut, Biohazard.
Constant touring built such a cult following that the
band were able to sign to Roadrunner Records for one
album, and then secure a major contract with Warner
Brothers Records in 1992. Urban Discipline was
recorded in under two weeks on a tiny budget, but
proved to be the band's breakthrough album.
Blisteringly heavy, with lyrics to match - 'Black And
White And Red All Over' was an anti-racism tirade,
intended to dispel a mistakenly applied fascist label
stemming from the debut's 'Howard Beach', which
concerned a racially motivated Brooklyn murder - the
album drew massive praise, as did wild live shows
during heavy touring with Kreator in Europe and Sick
Of It All in the USA. The band also recorded a well-
received track with rappers Onyx for the Judgement
Night soundtrack. The Warners debut, State Of The
World Address, was recorded in seven weeks, and
demonstrated that major label status did not mean any
compromising on Biohazard's part. The album featured
a furiously heavy Ed Stasium production and an
aggressive performance that attracted a succession of
rave reviews. The band embarked on a successful US
tour with Pantera and Sepultura as album sales took
off. However, a second appearance at the Donington
Festival came to a controversially premature end,
owing to the stage management's safety worries over
Biohazard's penchant for encouraging their audience to
join them on stage en masse. Further European touring,
including several festival dates, was problem-free, with
the band reaffirming a deserved reputation for their
ferocious live shows, before returning to the USA for
dates with House Of Pain and Danzig. Hambel was
sacked from the band in November 1995 prior to the
recording of Mata Leáo. His replacement was Rob
Echeverria
(b. 15 December 1967, New York, USA;
ex- Helmet ). No Holds Barred was a fierce live
album recorded in Europe.
