The irony of FLAW is, although their name connotes an aberration, the quartet
purveys a perfectly potent brew of aggro-American metal akin to the famed bourbon
of their home state, Kentucky. Just how potent becomes clear on first listen to
their intense 13-track debut, Through The Eyes.

Produced by David Bottrill
(Tool, Peter Gabriel), Through The Eyes is metal delivered
in a blue collar, though nonetheless forthright and schooled, manner. Jagged melodies,
guttural, skittering guitars and hefty rhythms propel vocalist Chris Volz's catharsis of
spiritual toxins contracted during a turbulent childhood; the centerpiece of which was
the suicide of his adoptive mother, whom Volz credits as sparking his interest in music.

She's actually a lot of the inspiration behind the music I write, he says, explaining
her suicide, which occurred when Volz was twelve years old, inspired the band's droning, apocalyptic current single, Whole. In fact, most of his lyrics stem from the experience,
and carry a theme of introspection and renewal, as opposed to pure and simple anger.
Granted, some of the songs rageæfor instance, the grand mal seether Reliance and
boiling first single Payback æbut they differ from the bilious bombast of their loud rock contemporaries in that they're about making personal progress instead of changing the
world.

The record touches on every emotion from sadness to happiness to complete sorrow
to anger and then on songs like Inner Strength, personal redemption. We really just
wanted to put together a very widely versed album of material that someone could listen
to front-to-back and get a variety of sounds, a variety of feelings, a variety of emotions,
a variety of opinions and lyrics. I think we were able to do that.

Sonically, FLAW is about dodging classification while having a multifaceted, yet
seamless, sound. The ethereal is blended with the full-on brutal; melody is tantamount
to force. Each member's influences are tapped and incorporated. We listen to everything
and we want the music to reflect that. One of the problems with rock today is there's
so much repetition. We wanted to have an album of songs that were hard to categorize,
so we have songs that are ethereal and layered and textured, then we have songs like
Reliance that are just heavy and screaming the whole way through. We just want to
give people their money's worth.

FLAW formed when Volz, newly relocated to Louisville, met up with guitarist Jason
Daunt and began writing together. Six months later, Ryan Jurhs was lured from his
guitar post in another band and took up a five-string bass guitar and supply backup
vocal. Miscellaneous guitarist and drummers would join and depart as the band issued
two CDs: American Arrogance, recorded for the bargain price of $68
(literally taking
advantage of Musician's Friend's 30-day money back guarantee) and Flaw. A management
team would take the band to the verge of a record deal, only to see it all deflate. FLAW
returned to Louisville and got back down to business, securing new management crafting
a new EP, Drama. Scant months later, the bandænow including guitarist Lance Arny and
drummer Chris Ballingeræhad a deal. The result, you hold in your hands.

Since Through The Eyes was released in October 2001, FLAW has toured relentlessly, canvassing the United States with Sevendust, Kittie, Mudvayne, Static X, Stereomud,
Drowning Pool, Cold, Dope and Skinlab. Metal Edge proclaimed the band one of #30
Bands To Watch in 2002 and two videos, Payback with ex-porn director Gregory Dark
and Whole, by Dean Karr
(Ozzy Osbourne, Marilyn Manson, 3 Doors Down) received
airplay on MTV2æ Whole is in regular rotationæMTVX and MuchMusic USA. Further,
Through The Eyes' lead track Only the Strong was handpicked by Sully Erna for the now
gold Scorpion King soundtrack, which was the number one-selling rock record in the
country for several weeks.

This, as Through The Eyes continues to hold steady in the Billboard Top 200 and FLAW
continues to thrill crowds. This summer will see the band opening for Kittie, Mushroomhead,
Ill Nino and American Head Charge in preparation for the European and Stateside Ozzfests.
Sadly, it will be without Daunt, who departed this year due to creative and personal
differences. For now, says Volz, the band will rock as a four-piece. We had to switch
around and get used to it, but it's going fine. We're actually sounding tighter and more
sonic then we ever have…like a machine.
