Deriving their name from a character in a popular war game story, Bolt Thrower
are an extreme grindcore rock band based in Birmingham, England. Comprising
Al West
(vocals), Gavin Ward
(guitar), Barry Thomson
(guitar), Jo Bench
(bass)
and Andy Whale
(drums), they released two attention-grabbing demos, In Battle
There Is No Law and Concessions Of Pain . They finally managed to gain a
recording contract on the strength of their session for BBC disc jockey John Peel,
broadcast on Radio 1 in January 1988. The same year, their debut album emerged,
featuring an aggressive fusion of hardcore and thrash with indecipherable vocals,
this time from replacement vocalist Karl Willets. Titled after their first demo, the
contents were housed on the Vinyl Solution label, after which the group moved
permanently to Earache Records. Realm Of Chaos was the first result of this union,
arriving in striking cover art from the Games Workshop empire that emphasized the
band's fondness for both fantasy and militaria. Tours with the musically like-minded
Napalm Death, Morbid Angel and Carcass brought these songs of conflict to a
progressively wider audience. Their bludgeoning wall of noise was continued on
Warmaster, by which time the press had developed the tag war metal for Bolt
Thrower. More intricate and less obvious was The IVth Crusade, with a more melodic
style prevalent between aural assaults, and the Games Workshop art dropped in
favour of a nineteenth-century painting by Delacroix. The production skills of Colin
Richardson also brought new lustre and clarity to the band's sound. However, Bolt
Thrower remained unable to change their press stereotyping. Their fourth album for
Earache saw Willets and Whale offer their swan-song performances. The remainder
of Bolt Thrower elected to continue without them and in late 1994 recruited Martin
van Drunen
(ex-Asphyx, Pestilence ; vocals) and Martin Kearns
(drums).
