1.Joey De Maio
(born in Auburn, NY) played bass in schoolband.
Worshiped Black Sabbath. Used to get closer with BS on their
Heaven and Hell tour, when he lended some of his equipment
to Terry Butler. For a while he worked as a roadie for BS
(he himself claimed that he worked just as a light-effect technician).
Now
(and since 1983) he almost singlehandedly has written
music and lyrics.
2.Eric Adams
(born Auburn, NY) a school days friend of
Joey. Started singing earlier
(when he was 9) than Joey plaing
his bass. Being from one town - never played in the same band
(even on school level) before Manowar came to life.
He handled the band's finances since he joined Manowar.
3.Ross Friedman
(born in Australia) moved to New York City
and played guitar for The Dictators since 1975. Released
3 albums with them. Than went to France
(worked for 1 year
in Shaking Street ). On Black Sabbath heaven and Hell tour
Shaking Street opened for Sabbath - this how De Maio met Friedman.
He left manowar in 88 after Kings of Metal album to
play more blues stuff - he organised The Pack
4.Donny Hamzik
(born in Poland) and Karl Kennedy before him
were found from a newspaper advertisement. Basically, Manowar searchedf
for an appropriate drummer with heart black enough
for 2 years, until one of accident female friends of De Maio
recommended to him:
5.Scott Columbus, who worked in a plumber shop in a little town
in New York State.
6.Michael Shankle played for a while for Chicago , before he
was choisen from about 150 guitarists to replace Friedman.
Eric and Joey met him while recording Kings of Metal in
Chicago.
7. I hope to unfound more about Karl Logan after next Manowar album
(due in April 95) will be released.
STYLE of Manowar was heavily influenced by Ozzy Sabbath
on the musical side, and by an outburst of interest to
Sword-and-Soucery fiction in early 80th on the side of the lyrics.
This made band exceptionally popular in Europe
(esp. Germany
and England), but next to unknown in USA. They were dropped by
their label month after Battle Hymns was released.
They had problems with Megaforce. But they didn't have too much
problems with Geffen , which released them in Europe.
Atlanic picked them up in 87, promoting their Fighting
the World album quite well, Kings of Metal was promoted
way worse, after the band refused to sell it out in their
Trimph of Steel
(92) release, they were finally dropped by
Atlantic. Now they back with Geffen also for the US
(as
well as European) deal for the oncoming album.
NAME of Manowar was described by Joey as a compiliation
of WAR
(because life is WAR, in his opinion) and MANnish
substance
(because the metal scene was and is whimpy).
WHO ARE THE 'FALSE ONES' ? - De Maio said that
False Metal is every band which does not play
to expectations of their followers, therefore
cheating them.
PRESS and MANOWAR - mutual animosity with US press. American
press tried very hard to neglect them totally. They.
, in
responce, never lose a chance to bash US metal press
on their European concerts.
Part 2
This posting is dedicated to all those who DIE ON THE DAWN OF EACH DAY...
(LV - Stand and fight, live by your heart )
HOBBIES of Manowar members - Joey is known in metal circles as a
karate kid for a long time. All memebers of the band are know as
a dedicated weighlifters, who like to pump their muscles up and
than demonstrate their impressive physics on the concerts.
CHILDHOOD REMINISCENCIES - Joey used to tell that he's prouid
that he's grown up in the 70th, when the music was great
(he
always mentions Ozzy Sabbath and Deep Purple as the most
prominent examples).
TOPICS of MANOWAR SONGS - I tried to group them up -
here's the result>. Don't forget that Sword-andSoucery
topics are often played with a magik number of 4 metal
KINGS
(4 members of Manowar), therefore, in many cases
Sword-and Soucery topic is very close to that of Manowar
as a band.
1.Straighforward SWORD-AND-SOUCERY:
Battle Hymn, Dark Avenger, Secrets of Steel, Gates of Valghalla,
March for Revenge, Revelation, Blood of my Enemy, Each Dawn I die,
Kill with Power, Hail to England, Bridge of Death, Tor, Oath,
Sign of the Hammer, Gayana, Blak Wind Fire and Steel, Defender,
Herz aus Stahl, Lament of Kings, Haiul and Kill, Pleasure Slave,
Warrior's Prayer, Achilles, Ride the Dragon, Spirit Horse,
Burning, Power of thy Sword, Demon's Whip.
2....how GREAT MANOWAR IS, and about their fight FOR TRUE METAL:
Metal Warriors, Kings of Metal,Manowar,All Men play on 10,Fighting the
World, Blow Your Speakers,Holy War,Black Arrows,
Warrior's Prayer, Warlord
(more about gedonistic image ),
Wheels of Fire
(the same comment), Animals
(the same)...
3.About TRUE HEAVY METAL PEOPLE :
Metal Dase, Gloves of Metal, Army of Immortals,Carry ON , Kings
of Metal, Blood of the Kings, Metal Warriors
4.Life stinks? But FINALLY IT'LL BE ALL RIGHT!:
Kingdom Come, Master of the Wind, Herz aus Stahl...
5.Minor topic
(for 1st album only) - social one-
Shell Shock, Death Tone.

I showed the LOWEST price I've ever met - and you comments

STORIES BEHIND SOME MANOWAR SONGS:
Wheels of fire -
all 4 of them LOVE drive car really fast.
they were actually pulled over by the local police while recording
this song.
HEArt of Steel -
People close to Joey often ask him does he really have a
steel heart. This was a reply.
Lament of Kings -
their favourite song on Kings of Metal. Was recorded for a
HUGE sum of mone
(which made Atlantic mad) in Bigmingham.s
St.Paul Catrhedral witha professional church choir. They
were all drressed up, while band had their tradiutional jeans
and/or loinclothers on only. Joey always said that
classical/church music is very heavy...
Warrior's Prayer -
Joey decided to retell this story iin the manner
his grandfather told those to him when he had been a kid...
Blood of the Kings -
about fans of Manowar
(in Europe) and their letters, which
sometimes gave materila for the songs - these letters
are Blood of the Kings...
Achilles -
dedicated to Deena Weinstein
(for her book Heavy Metal ,
where she wrote exceptiionally favourable about Manowar,
and who was Joey's close friiend for a number of years -
Hail To England -
from Sir Thomas Melory's narration about King Arthur.
I'll try to continue later,

Part 3
...thirsting for vengeance and mounds of slain
shaking the forest onto the plain
( Power of Thy Sword -92)\
LITERATURE BACKGROUND OF MANOWAR -
Know, or Prince, that between the times when the oceans sank Atlantis
and the times of the rise of the sons of Aries there was an age
undreamed of, when the shining kingdoms laid under the bright stars...
Here came Conan, the Cymmerian, sword in hand, who was destined to trample
the jeweleed thrones of the Earth under his sandaled feet...
(Robert Erwin Howard, The Nemedian Chronicles from
Conan the Cymmerian ,
(Part 1))
The literature which may be considered to be the closest to the realm
of Manowar's heroic fantasy stories is, IMO, Robert Howard's Conan
saga. I think many of you saw both movies based upon Howard's
books
(Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer with
mighty Schwarz in a leading role). For those who were pissed off
while watching the movies - the movies are rather far from
not only the narration of Howard's books, but from their style
and idea as well. Both movies were way too commercial.
The best piece of art on Earth based upon these 12 books
(I don't count endless aping attempts by mostly maronic
writers) is songs by Manowar. The info about general affiliation
of Joey to Conan saga was provided, as a matter of fact,
in Deena Weinstein's book. Among the songs most closely related
to the named books Ride the Dragon , Demon's Whip ,
secret of Steel , Burning , Dark Avenger
can be mentioned. As a matter of fact,
Conan saga is also indirectly based upon the Viking mythology
and history of the Viking invasions in Europe in 8-10
century, the same as a multitude of Manowar songs
( Kill with Power , Battle Hymn , Gates of Valghalla ,
March for Revenge , Blood of my Enemies , Black Wind, Fire and
Steel , Crown and the Ring , Hail and Kill ).
LV - Stand and fight, live by your heart
Karl Logan.
Karl hails from Clarks Summit Pennsylvania, USA.
His first big local band was Arc Angel, where he used to dress in a Randy Rhoads
(late Ozzy Osbourne guitarist) outfit
(polka dot vest etc).
Karl was the main lead guitarist in the band for about 6 years until
the band disbanded in 1990. They were a mostly cover band that did a few originals,
even recording a remake of Tracks of My Tears the old Smokey Robinson song,
on an independent label. They won a Best Unsigned band competition in a national magazine
(it may have been Hit Parader, i'm not quite sure).
Following the breakup of Arc Angel, Karl helped form a band
that would concentrate on original material, only playing covers if they had to,
called FALLEN ANGEL. Karl was the only Guitarist in the four piece band
(that was three piece with a keyboard sequencer for a while).
They released an independent cassette
(on which Karl only played on the track
Not That Easy ) in 1991. Karl recorded many unreleased tracks with this band,
including one called Streets are On Fire about the Los Angeles Rodney King Riots,
which he sang co-lead vocals on. Karl sang a few of the cover songs
in the bands cover sets, including faith no more's Falling to Pieces ,
Prince's Let's Get Crazy , and Ugly Kid Joe's Everything about You .
He also wrote an unreleased track called Bad Boy Blues
(a very guitar oriented song).
